Lakeshore Swimming Pool Association

Information for New Members
Structure of the Lakeshore Swimming Pool Association

1. Who owns and operates LSPA?

LSPA is owned by its members and is operated by a Board of Directors elected by its members.  The election of the Board happens each year at the Annual General meeting.  Day-today management of the pool during the summer is provided by a hired staff of lifeguards.  The Pool Manager supervises the life guarding staff.

2. Where do my membership fees go?

The biggest expense for the pool is the life guard staff.  Next is regular maintenance of the pool itself, which includes opening and closing of the pool, chemical supplies, repair and upkeep of the pumps and other equipment.  Other expenses include insurance, utilities and supplies.

Money is also set aside for capital improvements to the pool and building.

3. Why is volunteering important at LSPA?

Volunteers are extremely important at the pool.  All positions on the Board are volunteer and as much effort goes into making the pool run smoothly and into keeping the fees as low as possible.  Many jobs are done by volunteers, from managing the canteen, to cleaning the grounds, painting the pool, negotiating insurance contracts and doing the banking; to name just a few.  The pool always needs help!  Don’t be shy to get involved.  It can be a very rewarding experience and you get to meet lots of great people.  More importantly, we are able to keep membership fees low.

Safety and Behaviour

1. What are the safety rules at the Pool?

Safety rules are posted at the pool.  Please read and follow these rules.  Specific rules for the diving area are posted near the diving boards.  The lifeguards have final authority in all matters regarding pool safety and the behaviour of all members and guests in the pool area.

2. What qualifications do the lifeguards have?

All lifeguards have National Lifeguard certification and Instructors qualifications.

3. Are there special rules for the wading pool?

No, a lifeguard is not posted in the baby pool.  Parents and guardians are responsible for insuring the safety of their own children.  During a shift change, a lifeguard will pass through this area. The gates to the baby pool must be kept closed at all times.

4. Can children wear arm bands or floaties in the pool?

No.  Floaties are an indication that a child cannot swim independently and must have direct adult supervision at all times.  Floaties give a false sense of security to the person attending the child.  This rule is standard among outdoor pools like LSPA.

5. Are outside floating toys permitted in the pool?

No, large floating toys are not permitted in the pool.  Balls and flutter boards are available from the lifeguard office though.  On “Fun Day” or “Bring a Toy Day”, floating toys are permitted at the discretion of the lifeguards. These days will be posted at the pool.

6. How often is the water tested?

The pool water is tested a minimum of 3 times a day and on busy days it is tested every 2 hours.  This meets public health standards for such a pool.  If there is any doubt about the safety of the water the pool is closed until the problem is dealt with.

7. Is there a policy on taking diaper-aged children in the pool and the baby pool?

The staff prefers that diapers not be worn in the pool.  There are special swimming diapers available in stores that are acceptable.

Swimming Lessons

1. Can I choose a specific instructor for lessons?

Due to the large number of children in lessons, the scheduling is difficult.  As a result, requests for specific instructors for specific times cannot always be accommodated.  All of our instructors are fully qualified to deliver all Aquaquest and Royal Lifesaving courses.

2. What system of swimming levels is used at LSPA?

Lessons are taught according to the Red Cross Aqua Kid program.  The levels are 1 through 10.  The lifeguards will be able to tell you how these levels are evaluated and where your child should be placed if you are new to this system.

3. What about lessons for older children?

LSPA offers all three Bronze swimming levels.  Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross courses are offered twice during the summer.  Please refer to the swimming schedule for specific dates and times.  The lifeguard staff will be able to explain the requirements of these levels.

Other Activities

1. What other activities are available at LSPA?

LSPA has a synchronized swimming program and diving instruction.  Also, many of our staff are experienced speed swimmers, and offer their expertise to our members.  During specific times, LSPA also offers an Aquafit Class and Adult Stroke improvement.  Look for the information at the pool and in the Pool schedule.

Special Days at LSPA

1. What are some of the special events at LSPA?

During July, LSPA host its annual Fun Day.  Swimming races, boat races, pajama races, greasy watermelon contest; as well as a barbeque and corn roast.  Top it all off with a fireworks demonstration, clowns for the kids, penny toss and music.

In August, Casino Night lets you test your poker and roulette skills in a fun evening of chance.  Prizes are available for the kids as well as a Silent Auction for the adults.

2. Are there days when guests are allowed in the Pool?

Yes, local and out of town guests are permitted in the pool with a member.  Check the newsletter for specific days and times.  Guests pay a nominal fee for the use of the pool.  These fees are paid directly to the guard staff upon entering the pool.  All guests must abide by the pools rules.

If you have any questions, please contact LSPA or any Board member.
